There are clearly lots of ways to put geolocation and mapping tools to work. How can you envision using these tools in your own work?

I am someone who is “directionally challenged” and has always struggled with maps, but with these tools I can confidently say that I can now (sort of) navigate Google Earth, Maps, and much more! I can see myself utilizing these tools when trying to figure out where places are when touristing on different trips or even when discussing the history of my own hometown. The Timelapse training made this doable. This was a fun module!
I had fun with these assignments. I learned a lot about how to pinpoint locations and one thing I learned how to do that I previously did not know I could do in Google Maps is the mark a shape. I liked doing the What I Did Last Week assignment and I do see myself using these tools in the future. I used Google Earth to pinpoint the location of Buenos Aires, Argentina because of the economic crisis the country is going through, this would be a good news story to take on. I do see using these tools for my journalism career when I work in a newsroom when I wish to find images for places I could base my news stories on.
I must admit it took me much longer than usual to do this assignment. I guess because I am similar to Julia and I too am directionally challenged. However, when I figured out how to navigate Google Earth I actually enjoyed this assignment. I can see myself utilizing the skills I learned in this module in my everyday work at the news station. These maps can definitely be used when we are referencing a location where we have a reporter stationed or if we are referring a location for our viewers. These tools can help us enhance the stories we tell about the world around us.
I’ve never used these tools before except Google maps to map for directions but that’s it. Using maps to report on stories seems a bit complicated and involved. It will definitely take me a little time to adjust and increase my knowledge about geotags and authenticating videos. I did like reading about how to authenticate videos. It’s like putting a puzzle together and discovering all these clues. I felt like I was doing detective work. For some reason I envisioned the Pink Panther with a magnifying lens. The map your week assignment was fun. It’s cool to trace your activity on a map and when you look at in comparison to the entire state you live in or the world, you realize that you’re only covering such a small piece of this earth. This assignment caused me to desire to travel to see more of the world.
I can relate to being directionally challenged. I struggled a lot because I had to fight hard to overcome a huge lack of confidence in using maps. The funny thing is that for the past four years, even through the pandemic, I was a traffic reporter. Daily, reading maps, monitoring live cameras, and navigating people to work or around accidents–forced me out of my comfort zone. This module helped me to organize and gain more confidence. I also learned a lot about how I can use features of Google Maps to do much more than just get directions. I envision these tools being used as a standard way to better organize big projects and more efficiently build stories and concepts.
