How can you envision using the tools and techniques you learned about in this module? Have you had to do this sort of verification in any work you’ve done? Where, if at all, have you seen any examples of this sort of verification process in the news lately?

I have never had to do this sort of verification in any work I’ve done, but I found these steps and tools to be super helpful and interesting. For example, I had no idea that it was even possible to perform the Google Image Search that verifies when and where a photo was taken. This would be so helpful when writing any kind of news story! I envision teaching my future students to use these tools and techniques to fact-check media posts that they read. Being able to evaluate posts on the media is an important tool that I believe students should be taught.
Definitely, I will use these Google verification tools in the future. It will come in handy as a journalist who has to report the news with honesty and integrity foremost. This is my first time using Google image Reverse Image Search and Send to Exif Viewer, and it was a breeze getting to try them hands-on. I have seen this type of verification tool being used in CNN newscasts. I see them used often by broadcast journalists during U.S. presidential election cycles after a primetime debate has aired. usually they will partake in this fact-checking process when they are on the air to debunk and verify claims made by politicians. I can’t wait to use these tools in the near future.
I can envision myself using most of these tools learned in this module on a daily basis in my work as a journalist. These tools help journalist fact check stories which in turn help fight the spread of misinformation. I really enjoyed the Google Images and Google Translate search engines. I have always used Google but I did not know that there is so much more you can do with this search engine besides searching for information using words and phrases. I have not had to use any type of verification tools like these in the past. I am sure it is because I did not know they existed. However, now I know that they exist and I know how to use them I can see myself using them in my work moving forward. I have seen these tools used most recently during debates and interviews with politicians and during investigative news pieces.
This verification process is completely new to me. CNN political fact checker, Daniel Dale is the person I thought of as I read through the verification lessons and took the quizzes. Before this class, I thought wow, his job must be really tough having to quickly read through all those documents day in and day out to get to the most accurate information, but now I see it is simply a matter of using the right digital tools. This verification process has just been an eye-opener. This process helps to ensure that you’re not perpetrating misinformation and it’s digital! Claire Wardle in her Instagram Verification was going through her process really fast and was able to drilldown to the most accurate information without a hitch. I hope to be as efficient as she is. I found First draft verification checklist very helpful in knowing the steps to take to verify information.
I can envision using the tools and techniques that I learned about in this module to have more confidence in properly vetting stories and documentary projects. Educationally, I can share these tools with future journalism students during workshops and training sessions. Up until 2022, I was responsible for daily on-air real-time updates that required using many of these tools in a fast-paced radio and social media setting. I also use verification tools in other types of media-related projects. Sadly, verification to debunk false news and misinformation seem to be a regular part of daily news. Lately, I’ve seen the verification process active in relation to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, with attempts to debunk claims of a false war.
